Carolina Ponte (Salvador, Brazil, 1981) lives and works between Baltimore (USA) and Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro). Her practice draws on crochet and drawing to create works with a pronounced installation-oriented character, rooted in the integration of popular textile practices into the field of contemporary art.
The artist articulates patterns, colors, and rhythms in multicolored compositions that occupy the wall and extend into the exhibition space, transcending two-dimensionality as they expand into volumes in dialogue with architecture. Her work is imbued with the aesthetic freshness of the surrounding landscapes and engages with the traditions of printmaking, tapestry, and contemporary drawing, disciplines in which she trained at the Escola de Belas Artes at UFRJ and the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage.
She has held solo exhibitions including Adornando el Absurdo at Galería Enrique Guerrero (Mexico City, 2023); Espelho Labirinto at CCBB Brasília (2022); Caleidoscópio at DotART (Belo Horizonte, 2021); Loose Ends at Jane Lombard Gallery (New York, 2021); Da linha, o fio at the Espaço Cultural BNDES (Rio de Janeiro, 2019); Tecer Mundos at Sesc Quitandinha (Petrópolis, 2019); Líneas en el espacio at the Museo de la Cancillería (Mexico City, 2019); Balangandã at Zipper Galeria (2018); Tender Constructions at the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, 2017); Solo el excesso at MdM Gallery (Paris, 2016); E o silêncio? at Galería Enrique Guerrero (Mexico City, 2016); and Filigranas at Zipper Galeria (2013), among others. She has also participated in group exhibitions such as Watercolour at the Textile Museum of Canada, in partnership with the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games; Aquilo que nos une at Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro (2016); and Lugar Comum at Sesc Quitandinha (Petrópolis, 2012). She was an artist-in-residence at Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, 2017), Riddergade AIR / Viborg Kunsthal (Denmark, 2017), and the FB AIR Program (Facebook, São Paulo, 2018).
