Fernando Velázquez (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1970) lives and works in São Paulo. A multimedia artist, his work encompasses videos, installations and interactive objects, audiovisual performances, and images generated through algorithmic processes. He explores the relationship between nature and culture, bringing two central themes into dialogue: the perceptual capacities of the human body and the mediation of reality through technical devices. He is interested in the intersection of art with other fields of knowledge, such as science, philosophy and visual anthropology.
He holds a master's degree in Fashion, Art and Culture from Senac-SP and a postgraduate qualification in Online and Offline Video and Technologies from MECAD in Barcelona. He has participated in exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including the Emoção Art.ficial Bienal de Arte e Tecnologia (Brazil, 2012); the Bienal do Mercosul (Brazil, 2009); the Mapping Festival (Switzerland, 2011); the WRO Biennale (Poland, 2011); and the Pocket Film Festival at the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2007). He also participated in Réseaux-Mondes (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2022); Out of this World (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2023); the New York Triennial of Latin American Art (NYLAAT, Lehman College Art Gallery, 2025); and the Ars Electronica Festival (Linz, Austria, 2025). At Zipper Galeria, he has held the solo exhibitions Biastiário: matriz das malícias (2025); Rituais da Complexidade (2021); Iceberg (2018); and Mindscapes (2012).
He has received, among other distinctions, the Prêmio Sergio Motta de Arte e Tecnologia (Brazil, 2009), the Mídias Locativas Arte.Mov award (Brazil, 2008), and the Vida Artificial prize (Spain, 2008), as well as the PROAC grant for career achievement in Visual Arts (São Paulo, 2021). He was nominated for the CIFO–Ars Electronica Award in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. He has been a guest lecturer at PUC-SP, FAAP-SP and Senac-SP, and currently teaches in FAAP/Uol’s online postgraduate program in Contemporary Art and Audiovisual. He gives lectures and workshops at public, private and third-sector institutions, including Stony Brook University (New York), Cyberfest (Saint Petersburg, Russia), Naustruch (Sabadell, Spain), and Visiones Sonoras (Morelia, Mexico). He has organized projects and exhibitions, including Motomix 2007, Papermind Brasil, and Projeto !wr?, and served as curator and artistic director of Red Bull Station in São Paulo from 2015 to 2018. His work is held in collections including CCSP, MAC Goiânia, MAR-RJ, MARGS, EAC Montevideo, Fundación Luis Seoane (A Coruña), and Musashino Art University (Tokyo).
