Bryant Park is a rare green carpet set into the middle of Midtown, just behind the New York Public Library, and for a long time it was the opposite of the refuge it is today, so overtaken by decay in the 1970s that it became a byword for an area to avoid, until the celebrated renovation that at the end of the 1980s gave it back to the city. At the centre of one of its lawns turns the carousel named "Le Carrousel", opened to the public in 2002 and designed by Marvin Sylvor in the French style, to the sound of cabaret music.

A favourite of the artist in the city, the ride appears here at night, still beneath the lit towers that surround the park, and its lights, still warm, form a small focus of heat within the sleeping skyscraper. The late hour empties the lawn and lets the photograph hold the silence of a place suspended just before life begins again, in counterpoint to the daytime image of the same carousel, which Junqueira presents alongside this one as the two faces of a single day.
