By day, the French carousel "Le Carrousel", opened in 2002 in the heart of Bryant Park, turns beneath the skyscrapers and the bare winter trees, and the scene allows the long history of this block to be recovered. Where today there is a garden of formal design there once rose a high-walled water reservoir, in the time of the Croton Aqueduct, and soon afterward the New York Crystal Palace, a pavilion of iron and glass raised in 1853 for an exhibition of the industries of the world and destroyed by a fire a few years later. The park itself took its present name only in 1884, in honour of the poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant.

Accustomed to staging her scenes with care, here the artist merely records the carousel as it was already turning, adding nothing. Presented alongside the nighttime version, the image returns the same object in two states that the light of day and that of night are enough to tell apart, so that one photograph answers the other, each one keeping the park in a distinct moment.
