Mario Ramiro (Taubaté, SP, Brazil, 1957) lives and works in São Paulo. A multimedia artist, he graduated from ECA-USP (1978–1982), received a DAAD scholarship to study at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1992–1993), earned a master's degree in Photography and New Media from the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (Germany, 1994–1997), and a doctorate in Visual Arts from ECA-USP (2008). He is a professor in the Department of Fine Arts and the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at the School of Communications and Arts, University of São Paulo (USP).
Ramiro's practice encompasses urban interventions, telecommunications networks, sculptures, environmental installations, photography and sound art. Since the late 1970s, he has worked with technical media to reflect on image production and consumption. His works emerged from a liminal context—when Brazil was still living under the effects of the military dictatorship—and use xerographic prints as a central medium. In 1979, he was a member of the collective 3NÓS3, alongside Hudinilson Jr. and Rafael França, a key historical reference for urban interventions and experimental art in Brazil in the 1980s. Ramiro is also a musician and a member of the band Do/Z, alongside Adriano Leal, Diogo de Nazaré and Guilherme Xavier.
His research also unfolds through sound performances with groups such as Kurokos, Os Macaco and TheBanda, curatorial work, and long-term projects that continue to be presented internationally. In 2025, he curated the exhibition Arte rock, samba, tropicália, pop, punk, noise at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, France, and his works were included in Hudinilson Jr. Echoes in Xerox at the Kunsthaus Pasquart (Biel, Switzerland).
He has held solo exhibitions including Improvável at Zipper Galeria (São Paulo, 2017); Above all, they had no fear of Vertigo at Peter Kilchmann Gallery (Zurich, Switzerland, 2022 and 2024); Caixa Preta at Fundação Iberê Camargo (Porto Alegre, 2018); Arte Veículo at SESC Pompeia (São Paulo, 2018); 3NÓS3: nômade, clandestino e impresso at Galeria Jaqueline Martins (São Paulo, 2022); Abrakadabra at Galeria Jaqueline Martins (2014); Ruído Branco at Galeria Jaqueline Martins (2013); and Cine-Roboticismo at Galeria Obra Aberta (Porto Alegre, 2001). With the collective 3NÓS3, he has taken part in international group exhibitions including Resistance Performed at Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Zurich, 2015); Perder la forma humana at Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid, 2012); Espaço Aberto/Espaço Fechado at Henry Moore Institute (Leeds, 2006); and Kollektive Kreativität at Kunsthalle Fridericianum (Kassel, 2005). He has also participated in the 25th São Paulo International Biennial (Mostra Paralela, 2002); the 30th São Paulo Biennial (the Mobile Radio radio programme with Kurokos, 2012); the 3rd and 7th editions of the Mercosul Biennial (Porto Alegre, 2001 and 2009); the Liverpool Biennial (England, 2002); and the 9th Havana Biennial (Cuba, 2006).
