This view moves deeper beneath the arcade itself, the covered passage that the architect Calvert Vaux raised to carry the visitor to the fountain underneath the carriage road, without any need to cross it.
The whole of the ornamentation fell to the architect and draughtsman Jacob Wrey Mould, author both of the ceiling tiles and of the figures carved in the stone, in which the seasons of the year appear peopled with fruits and birds, so that whoever walks the corridor moves beneath a kind of calendar wrought in sandstone.
The succession of arches and the golden half-light give the underside of the terrace an unexpected sumptuousness, closer to a nave than to an urban passage, and it is not unusual for street musicians to take over the spot for its generous acoustics.
